Interview Candiria

For those totally unfamiliar with Candiria, can you remain to us the story of the band ?

Candiria was formed in 1992 in Brooklyn New York. We wanted to make music that challenged the listner, music that had an element of suprise. We practiced vigorously and played some shows throught the years, but by 1997 we became really serious about touring. We incorporated all of our musical influences into our songs and into live shows filled with energy.

What are your biggest musical influences ?

Miles Davis, Metallica, Sepultura, Herbie Hancock, Parliament funkadelic,Michael Jackson, Tool, Depeche Mode, Alice in Chains, Earth Wind and Fire, Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Wu Tang Klan, Quicksand, Failure, Bjork, Biohazard and Obituary. yhe list goes on and on.

Talking about your new album called «What Doesn’t Kill You …». Can you tell us more about this album ?

The album was inspired by the bands’ nearly fatal accident on September of 2002. We wanted to capture the chaos and vulnerability of that horrible experience but we also wanted to capture the hope that the band had to keep on going. The best way to do so was by incorporating melody and focusing on the emotional aspect of song writing. The screaming represents chaos. The singing represents vulnerability. We were able to do that and still keep the element of suprise. no one expected us to do that or even knew if we were capable.

Can you speak to us about the recording sessions ?

It was very challenging. We were recording our songs to a click track, something we’ve never done on a Candiria album. I was also experimenting with singing for the first time. I had to sing each verse, each chorus and each chapter eight times each. I had to make sure i sang my words clearly. We wrote " DOWN" in the studio because we got rid of 2 songs that just didn’t make the album. It was the most we’ve ever went through in regards to recording an album, but it’s our favorite Candiria album.

«What Doesn’t Kill You …» was produced by David Bendeth, who has produced and mixed bands like Killswitch Engage, 40 Below Summer … Why this choice ?

He owns our label and I feel he’s a great producer. He made me believe in myself and brought out  elements in our song writing that needed help.

How did you proceed for the composition ?

Who is responsible for song writing ?  Composing a Candiria song usually starts off with a riff or vocal melody and each band member adds to it. I would have to say the whole band was involved with the song writing in some shape or form.

What are the lyrics talking about ? Where do you find inspiration ?

The lyrics on this album  sing about  war, persistence and determination, spiritual life and spiritual death, overcoming oppression, writing music that you want despite the nay sayers, overcoming the trials and tribulations of everyday living, human contradiction and my experience with my father or lack of. I am inspired by spiritual and physical life, the emotions of others and my own. God and The Devil, Abstinence and sex, pride and humility, what i can see and what i cannot see.

What’s your favourite track on  «What Doesn’t Kill You …»., and why ?

The Nameless King is my favorite track on this album. I think it’s it’s the perfect blend of screaming and singine. The verse is played off time, it’s played in six actually. It has a big chorus and the song is about not giving up, no matter how dificult your situation is. I wrote that song at home while my band memebers went to go hang out with metallica at a club in New York City. I wanted to go, but work comes first.

What are the big differences between this new album and the previous ?

The song writing on the previous albums were more anything goes while the songs on this album were more focused. The production is better and the message is clearer, not written in riddles.

What are your favourite bands and all times albums ?

My favorite bands are Tool, A perfect circle, Guns N’ Roses, Eminem and Bjork. My faorite albums of all time are Michael Jacksons’ Thriller, Guns N’ rosess’ Appetite for Destruction, Tools’ Aenima, Def Leppards’ Hysteria, A perfect circles 13th step and Snapcases Progression through unlearning.

You played with a lot of bands : what are your best memories ?

Playing the Beast Feast in an arena in Japan with Pantera, Slayer, Sepultura, Kittia, Biohazard, Vision of Disorder plus others. It was a Great experience to play in front of 10,000 screaming fans.

Are there any plans for an upcoming tour ?

We will be touring Europe in September 2005 with Devil Driver and All that remains. We’re looking forward to it.

Do you have funny or strange stories about the band you can share with us ?

We were on tour one day a few years ago in the States. I fell asleep in the van, woke up and found myslef duct taped to the my seat. My band members wrapped my whole body and the seat together then woke me up by shaking me and screaming my name. I can laugh at it now.

What are your projects for the future ?

I started working on material for the new album already. nothing wrong with having a head start. I also plan on producing a hip hop album with my drummer Ken.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show called Metal Choc ?

I feel honored to have the opportunity to get interviewed by you from across the world. It’s a dream come true to have my music played  especially in another country. Thankyou...............Carley Coma
