Interview The Arcane Order

Can you tell us more about your new album called « In The Wake Of Collisions » ?

The new album is a more mature album than our debut album. We searched for our own sound own found it. On our debut we were mainly influenced by oldschool thrash and mixed it with more modern stuff. On INWOC we play some kind of extreme thrash mixed with epic sometimes fast, sometimes slower Death Metal. The album is a concept album dealing with the theme "collisions" in the lyrics. We are really proud with the end result of the new album and hope that everyone else will embrace it as well.

How long have you been recording the album?

This time we weren’t in the studio for that long, but it was actually really great this time. The funny thing was that we only had like 18 days the time, while we had 21 days for our debut. And for some reason we were actually done 2 days ahead this time! I have never tried that before and that was a really great feeling. Making an album with no stress and everything running along smoothly is really amazing. This way you are so much more able to focus on the really important stuff: To make and record some great songs. Also we didn’t have as much time to prepare for this record, so going into the studio was really interesting, because

How did you proceed for the composition ?

The way we write songs is that I record all riffs at home and put the songs together. I then send it to the other guys and ask them for input and great ideas. We then meet in the rehearsal and arrange the song together. It works very well that way for us.

Can you tell something about the lyrics?

"In the Wake of Collisions" is the title of a concept, which basically deals with various aspects of the main theme collisions. It is not a concept album in terms of having a thoroughly, ongoing story with the same main character, but more a concept album that portray the main theme in different scenarios, which are all open for interpretations. The collision theme is to be understood metaphorically. However the lyrics deal with identifiable human experiences situated or based on concrete clashes between ideas and pragmatism, values and moral standards, democracy and tyranny, wars and prosperity, love and hate, life and death, religions and secularism, culture and nature etc.

What are your favourite songs out of this new album ? And what makes them so special for you ?

Well I personally really like all the songs on the new record, because they to me all sound different while maintaining a red line, like you talked about yourself. We tried to work on making the songs very a lot beets-per-minute wise and just do the very best we could to make interesting long-lasting songs. I personally also like "Death is Imminent" and "Eruptions of Red" a lot, but like I said, I think all songs deserve a listen!

Can you speak to us about your musical evolution ? For you, what are the biggest differences between this new album and the previous?

That we found our own sound on the new album. On the debut we were more or less straight Thrash Metal with some modern influences. New we’re like a mixture of extreme Thrash metal, epic Death Metal and just atmospheric, dark stuff. Some people even think the new songs have a bit of a Black Metal vibe to them, but we are not influenced by Black Metal at all. But who cares, as long as people like the music, right?

Who created the artwork ?

The cover was created by Sons of Nero who also did the artwork for our debut album. We made a description to our artworkers about our concept and what we wanted the cover to look like. The cover is meant to give the sensation of something very dark, mysterious and to support the collisions theme.

Which songs from the album will you playing live ? Why did you choose that ones?

For the next show we will be playing "Death is imminent", "Between reason and hubris", "The serpent tower", "Eruptions of Red" and "Sanctity of Allegiance" from the new record, but for other shows we will definitely play some of the other songs as well. The good thing about the new album is that we can play all the songs, and we can then change them from show to show.

Did you film a promotional video ?

Not yet but hopefully we can do it with this new album. I don’t know which song we would choose though, but we would have to find out.

Are there certain songs on the album you want to mention or tell something about?

Well, something that really stand out in my mind was when we were creating the 2 songs "Death is imminent" and "Sanctity of allegiance" in the studio. When we added the keyboard to those track, the intro part of "Death…" and the outro part of "Sanctity…" it was such a special and actually emotional experience to us, because it added so much special tension, drama and as for "Sanctity…" something really beautiful and we just had no idea they would turn out like that. We were really blown away by what the keyboard guy who helped us out could do.

What are your touring plans for 2008 ?

We are currently trying to set up a tour during the Summer 08 and also as many festival gigs as possible all over Europe.

Can you tell us an anecdote which particularly marked the band ?

I think putting together the new album was a milestone in the journey of The Arcane Order because we discovered our own style and we are all very happy with the result.

And as a conclusion, can you say some words for my radio show Metal Choc ?

Thanks so much for doing this interview. I hope that everyone will check out our new record "In the Wake of Collisions". It is somewhat different than our debut, but so much better in many ways, and our old fans will for sure be able to hear it is still The Arcane Order. Everyone please come check us out when we hit the road in Spring/Summer 2008. Cheers!
